No Telescope necessary!
I had plans to buy a deep sky light bucket telescope. On the 40th anniversary of lunar landing I got my Sky Safari free. I have travelled all across the universe from the comfort of my home. I saw Mercury for the first time after trying for 65 years. The description of objects is the best textbook on astronomy with exemplary clarity of language.
The bonus was to be able to see the planets at time of actual birth in the year of birth for myself and others.
The speed at which the app recalculates Sky positions is incredible. The equations may not be too complex but there are a lot of objects. It even shows man made satellites in live motion which helps in viewing them.
The current conjunction of Venus and Jupiter is even more revealing when I stepped one day ahead and back. Jupiter moves faster than Venus - not true, until I realized that it is the earth speeding by Jupiter that is responsible for the apparent motion. It is also clear that this conjunction is only in apparent line of sight from the earth speeding along at 23 km/sec. There is absolutely no astronomical significance to it - sorry astrologers!!
Along with APOD, this is the Divya-chakshu vision shown in Bhagvad Gita available to all of us in the palm of our hands and always in our pockets!
I dont miss the mosquitos and telescope setups, not to mention waiting for dew to dry while the clouds close in or the sun comes up!!
This is a greater leap for Mankind (all included) than the landing on the moon.
